Observation Narrative
The vegetation in this plot represents an interior, non-tidal marsh with little evidence of disturbance. Although not entirely fresh, this marsh is the least brackish of any wetland found on Wallops Island. Distinctive species of this community type include Cladium mariscoides, Eleocharis fallax, Glyceria septentrionalis, and Iris versicolor. Other low areas of the island's interior may once have supported similar vegetation, but are now overrun by massive stands of Phragmites australis, which is present nearby. Entire area under 30 cm of water on 24 May 1995.
Marsh just south of intersection of main road and road to helipad, ca. 0.1 mi SSW of lookout tower and Coast Guard station in north-central part of Wallops Island.
